VIN Numbers

The VIN or Vehicle Identification Number is a quick way to identify which model and year car that you have and in most cases the VIN a way to match the engine and other parts to the car.

In 1968 the VIN number was located on a stainless steel plate on the top of the drivers side dash pannel visiable through the windsheild. The Breakdows is as follows:

1st Digit = GM line number

2 = Pontiac

2nd & 3rd Digit = Series number

23 = Firebird

4th & Fifth Digit = Body Type

37 = 2 Dr. Sport Coupe
67 = 2 Dr. Convertible

6th Digit = Year

8 = 1968

7th Digit = Assembly Plant

U = Lordstown, Ohio

L = Van Nuys, CA

Last Six Digits = Sequential Production Number

600001 and up for 6 cyl.
100001 and up for V8
