VIN Numbers


The VIN or Vehicle Identification Number is a quick way to identify which model and year car that you have and in most cases the VIN a way to match the engine and other parts to the car.

In 1972 the VIN number was located on a stainless steel plate on the top of the drivers side dash pannel visiable through the windsheild. The Breakdows is as follows:

1st Digit = GM line number

2 = Pontiac

2nd Digit = Series number

S = Firebird
T = Esprit
U = Formula
V = Trans Am

3rd & 4th Digits = Body Type

87 = 2 Dr. Sport Coupe

5th Digit = Engine

D = 250cid
M = 350 cid, single Exhaust, 2bbl
N = 350 cid, dual Exhaust, 2bbl
R = 400 cid, single Exhaust, 4bbl
P = 400 cid, dual Exhaust, 2bbl
T = 400 cid, dual Exhaust, 4bbl
X = 455 cid, single Exhaust, 4bbl

6th Digit = Year

2 = 1972

7th Digit = Assembly Plant

N = Norwood
L = Van Nuys

Last Six Digits = Sequential Production Number

500001 and up
