VIN Numbers


The VIN or Vehicle Identification Number is a quick way to identify which model and year car that you have and in most cases the VIN a way to match the engine and other parts to the car.

In 1977 the VIN number was located on a stainless steel plate on the top of the drivers side dash pannel visiable through the windsheild. The Breakdows is as follows:

1st Digit = GM line number

2 = Pontiac

2nd Digit = Series number

S = Firebird
T = Esprit
U = Formula
W = Trans Am

3rd & 4th Digits = Body Type

87 = 2 Dr. Sport Coupe

5th Digit = Engine

C = 231 cid, V6, 2bbl, Buick
Y = 301 cid, V8, 2bbl, Pontiac
L = 350 cid, V8, 4bbl, Chevrolet
R = 350 cid, V8, 4bbl, Oldsmobile
P = 350 cid, V8, 4bbl, Pontiac
Z = 400 cid, V8, 4bbl, Pontiac
K = 403 cid, V8, 4bbl, Oldsmobile

6th Digit = Year

7 = 1977

7th Digit = Assembly Plant

N = Norwood
L = Van Nuys

Last Six Digits = Sequential Production Number

100001 and up
