Spotter's Guide ![]() At the 1999 North American International Auto Show, Pontiac recently announced an all-new
GTO. A look into the future with guidance from the past, the new GTO asks the
question: What if? In 1964, Pontiac started it all with the introduction of the GTO. While not a celebated
intoduction, it went on to sell 6 times more units that expectied in the first year.
A decade later and more than a half million cars, it all came to an end. In 1974, the
oil embargo and the insurance companies brought the end of production for
the now legendary GTO. The new GTO design has reach. As for drawing from its original heritage,
compare the split grille openings, beltline, hood scoops, rocker
treatment, taillamps, honeycomb wheels, and hood tach. This is one
exciting automobile. The new GTO reflects the original in many ways: a powerful V8 engine driving the rear wheels, seating for four full sized adults, and a muscular image not found in many showrooms today. The biggest question that will be asked is if Pontiac is going to build the
new GTO concept car. The answer: not at this time. This is strictly a
design study on where the GTO would be if it were to be produced in the
21st century. GTO enthusiasts can only hope that this will change with
time.
